I had booked (and paid for) the house-in-town advertised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grunaulodge.com\/\">Grunau Chalets<\/a>, but when we got there they&#8217;d given that to someone else, banking on completing the new units by the time we got there&#8230; they didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>So the kids slept in the teardrop, and management gave me a sixpack of beer rather than some kind of a refund. And since (1) we all slept over, so I got what I wanted in the first place and (2) beer places were closed (Namibia stops selling beer at 13:00, not 17:00 like I&#8217;m used to on a Saturday) all was good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260448r1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1976\" title=\"P1260448r\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260448r1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260448r1.jpg 702w, http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260448r1-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Like the road, this post is a bit long, so here&#8217;s a cutline for you)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Next day we continued along the long, straight road. This view is fairly typical &#8212; the scenery changes, but the road runs straight, through the valley, over the hill, down the valley on the other side&#8230; for miles on end.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260468r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1977\" title=\"P1260468r\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260468r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260468r.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260468r-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My kind of place. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joesbeerhouse.com\/\">Joe&#8217;s Beerhouse<\/a> (recommended) in Windhoek. Also recommended.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260484r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1979\" title=\"P1260484r\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260484r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260484r.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260484r-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moonrise. Google Sky (an Android app) is amazing.<\/p>\n<p>And the day after that (Etosha is <em>far!<\/em>) we headed for Etosha proper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260507r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1980\" title=\"P1260507r\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260507r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260507r.jpg 700w, http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260507r-300x124.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Except that some people in the car had not done their homework, and did not know that there are swimming pools at the camps. So they suddenly needed costumes. Shopping in Otjiwarongo was indicated. I guarded the car, which resulted in my wallet being stolen (from inside the car while I stood right next to it without me noticing it. Slick.)\u00a0 Then we had to go to the police and to FNB to cancel my bank and credit cards. Fortunately Tanya had her VISA and fuel card, otherwise we would have been in trouble.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260553r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1982\" title=\"P1260553r\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260553r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260553r.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260553r-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, night three, Okaukuejo. Magic. Five rhino, two elephants, and plenty zebras, springbok, giraffes, gemsbok (oryx) and jackal at the water hole. And an owl caught a plover and strangled it to death in the tree. Life and death in Africa. After a while we saw two more females in the grass, and one then walked over for a drink.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, this is still the same day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260755r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1987\" title=\"P1260755r\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260755r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260755r.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/P1260755r-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looks photoshopped, but it&#8217;s not. The Okaukuejo waterhole is really just&#8230; there.<\/p>\n<p>Spent three nights in Okaukuejo, then headed back home (I could post more pictures of the road, but believe me, it looks pretty much the same going back). Got home Saturday just after five. At least this time they had a room for the kids at Grunau.<\/p>\n<p>4220 km at an average of\u00a0 78 km\/h, total trip time 53 hours 41 minutes, average fuel consumption 7.8l\/100km. Towing the teardrop probably cost me about R600 of the R4000 fuel bill (fuel is cheaper in Namibia, even though it&#8217;s trucked up from here, because they have less tax).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So we saddled up the teardrop, and headed north, half past six one Saturday morning.
