While we sometimes have rain, this year September 1st was an absolutely gorgeous day.<\/p>\n<p>Also, in the other hemisphere, students go to school after summer holidays. Back in the late eighties and early nineties, new students getting access to the university computer networks caused all kinds of chaos on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eternal-september.org\/\">usenet<\/a> (what we had instead of the world wide web back then) until they acquired some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bofhcam.org\/co-larters\/distributing-clue\/\">clue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This changed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catb.org\/jargon\/html\/S\/September-that-never-ended.html\">September 1993<\/a>, when AOL came online and flooded the network with clueless lusers. Some nerd types adopted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.df7cb.de\/projects\/sdate\/\">new calendar<\/a> &#8212; today being\u00a0September 7672, 1993.<\/p>\n<p>On September 1st 2014, the lusers got to Tam.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/20140901-Tam.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2581\" title=\"20140901-Tam\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/20140901-Tam.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"43\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;net is just a little bit poorer today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September marks the start of spring in South Africa.
