{"id":3389,"date":"2016-06-20T15:00:05","date_gmt":"2016-06-20T13:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?p=3389"},"modified":"2016-06-30T13:26:41","modified_gmt":"2016-06-30T11:26:41","slug":"twee-boerbokke-en-n-haas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?p=3389","title":{"rendered":"&#8230; twee boerbokke en &#8216;n haas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Where four fellows drive 900 kilometers on a quest for free-range hormone-free meat, forget their first-night <a href=\"http:\/\/www.braai.co.za\/blog\/generalbraai\/what-is-a-braai\/\">braaivleis<\/a> in the farmer&#8217;s deep freeze, and end up on the back of a <a href=\"http:\/\/birdsofeden.co.za\/index.php?comp=article&amp;op=view&amp;id=1553\">bakkie<\/a> with a spotlight and a shotgun looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_African_springhare\">another source of protein<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We drove up to Kakamas after work on Friday 10th June. Got there close to six o&#8217;clock in the morning. It&#8217;s a bit of a drive.<\/p>\n<p>First point of order was hunting springbok, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eUETGmq7Ugs\">Boesmanland<\/a>. The buck went down, and we approached it too quickly. It got up and ran for <em>five kilometers<\/em> before it bled out. Five kilos. With a hole in its neck I can stick my fist in.<\/p>\n<p>African game is tough.<\/p>\n<p>After that we were off to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?cat=6\">Kalahari<\/a> for gemsbok and the odd springbok.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eye of Mordor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.za\/maps\/@-28.542379,21.0778134,3187m\/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en\">Close to Upington<\/a> we went past <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esi-africa.com\/news\/khi-solar-one-kicks-into-commercial-operation\/\">Khi Solar One<\/a>. At night it normally gets cold enough so that you can just close things up in the daytime, preserve the freezing overnight temperatures. Time to take stock. Shotgun, check. Shooting lamp, check. Anything&#8217;s better with barbeque sauce. And the remains went well in the omelettes the next morning too.<\/p>\n<p>Spent the next day recovering, shooting the guns in, making sure the quality of the alcohol was up to spec, and so forth and so on.<\/p>\n<p>In the mean time we heard that the four fellows coming from Gauteng hit a kudu outside Vryburg, totalled their vehicle, and decided to cancel their trip. Through the heart, she left a blood spoor for about 50m and went down. I picked out the first one I could find that was (1) a reasonably big male (2) standing still (3) with no other animals in front or behind it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" and a <a href=\"http:\/\/boerboksa.co.za\/\">boerbok<\/a> (they&#8217;ve gone wild, you&#8217;re not going to catch one in the conventional way, gotta shoot &#8217;em) bringing the total to eight gemsbok (one for the church), fifteen springbok (of which we took 14), two boerbok (of which T took one) and one haas (consumed on premises).<\/p>\n<p>We sent the meat to Kakamas with the farmer, spent the evening drinking, and returned one day early, via Kakamas where we still had to remove the skins, cut the meat into pieces, and load the trailer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"
