Really.<\/p>\n<p>I bought the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpackagegallery.com\/main.php\/v\/food\/breakfast\/1299.jpg.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jungle Oats<\/a> on Tuesday already, figuring I want to make either <a href=\"http:\/\/houseobsession.wordpress.com\/2008\/10\/28\/simple-delicious-oatmeal-cookie-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\">oatmeal cookies<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/worldsfare.wordpress.com\/2008\/10\/29\/scottish-oatcakes\/\" target=\"_blank\">bannocks<\/a>. And then I read <a href=\"http:\/\/whimfield.com\/2008\/11\/cookies_whimfield\/\" target=\"_blank\">the posting by Laura-Jane<\/a>, about how she can&#8217;t bake, yet, because of not having a kitchen. I feel for her, and I realise how much we&#8217;ve actually accomplished in the past seven months.<\/p>\n<p>So I made oatmeal cookies. Simple, nothing like what Laura-Jane is capable of, to judge by her pictures, but a first for me, and we ate them all. The thermofan oven works well.<\/p>\n<p>I then went on to make a lentil chili, without the chili (OK, I put in about a teaspoon of Tobasco sauce). I also added a bit of vegetable stock.<\/p>\n<p>Comments from the omnivores :<\/p>\n<p>Tamsyn : huh-uh, gimme some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?p=442\" target=\"_blank\">Marsala-less Marsala Chicken<\/a>. (Tamsyn avoids vegetarian food on principle).<br \/>\nTanya : It&#8217;s OK. Maybe a bit too tomato-ey.<br \/>\nMe : Yea, not bad.<\/p>\n<p>Comments from the resident vegetarian :<\/p>\n<p>Jessica : Oooh! Nice! Is there more? <a href=\"http:\/\/icanhascheezburger.com\/2007\/05\/02\/nom-nom-nom-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nom nom nom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So I guess I&#8217;ll hafta make it again.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lentil Chili<br \/>\nFrom: therese@garnet.berkeley.edu<\/p>\n<p>4 cups dried lentils<br \/>\n6 &#8211; 7 cups water (tomato juice can be subsituted for two cups water)<br \/>\n1 1-lb can tomatoes, or 3 to 4 large ripe tomatoes, chopped<br \/>\n2 tsp. ground cumin<br \/>\n1 tsp. paprika<br \/>\n1\/2 tsp. dried thyme<br \/>\n10 to 12 (yes!) cloves garlic<br \/>\n2 medium onions, finely chopped<br \/>\n2 tsps salt (I cut this down)<br \/>\nlots of ground black pepper<br \/>\n4 to 6 Tbls tomato paste<br \/>\n1 to 2 Tbls red wine vinegar<br \/>\ncrushed red pepper, to taste<\/p>\n<p>garnish:<br \/>\ncheddar (not necessary, vegans can eliminate this)<br \/>\ntoasted cashews<br \/>\nminced fresh parsley or cilantro<\/p>\n<p>Her recipe calls for cooking lentils separately, and then chopping<br \/>\nand sauteeing veggies and throwing them in.\u00c2\u00a0 When I&#8217;ve made it, I<br \/>\nput everything in together and cook is slowly until the lentils are soft.<\/p>\n<p>You can easily make this in a pressure cooker, just blast it for about<br \/>\n45 minutes, or put it in your crock pot and let it cook all day.\u00c2\u00a0 I have<br \/>\nneither device, and cook it slowly on top of the stove.\u00c2\u00a0 The garlic<br \/>\ntaste, especially when slow- cooked is not overwhelming, and in fact<br \/>\nis wonderful!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I looked at the recipe, and realised that four cups of lentils is a helluva lot. Used two cups instead, sort-of halving the recipe. Except I used a whole large tin of tomato puree, next time I&#8217;ll use a small tin.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, the garlic does disappear. I think.
