{"id":2550,"date":"2014-08-06T18:22:56","date_gmt":"2014-08-06T16:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?p=2550"},"modified":"2014-08-06T16:49:12","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T14:49:12","slug":"streisand-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?p=2550","title":{"rendered":"Streisand Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a hoary old bit of Internet folklore, that in the mists of time when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catb.org\/jargon\/html\/D\/dinosaur.html\">dinosaurs<\/a> roamed the computer rooms, there existed a machine <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/forum\/#!topic\/alt.folklore.computers\/lZy6zvmxLjc\">which could be upgraded by cutting a single wire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the machine shipped with more power than you paid for, with some kind of a silicon handbrake to cripple the hardware until such time as you could afford to pay for an upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s long ago and <del>we do things differently now<\/del> some people don&#8217;t learn from history.<\/p>\n<p>Because apparently Tektronix sells equipment with built-in capabilities that costs money to enable, <a href=\"http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2014\/07\/28\/cloning-tektronix-application-modules\/\">except if you can program an EEPROM<\/a>. And not with some encrypted password or string, no, apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2014\/08\/05\/hardware-security-and-a-dmca-takedown-notice\/\">plain text available straight off of Tektronix&#8217; website will do the trick<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So after Hackaday linked to <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140729081735\/https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/blinkyoontz\/hacktek\">Oontz&#8217; website<\/a>, Tektronix got all butthurt and issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/blinkyoontz\/hacktek\">DMCA takedown<\/a> notice.<\/p>\n<p>Notes to Tektronix:<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Streisand_effect\">Streisand Effect<\/a>. I wouldn&#8217;t have written this post if you had not got all upset.<\/p>\n<p>2. <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\">Wayback Machine<\/a>. Jason <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/*\/http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2014\/07\/28\/cloning-tektronix-application-modules\/\">saved it all for us<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140729081735\/https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/blinkyoontz\/hacktek\">Including the original post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3. Once <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/oldnewthing\/archive\/2013\/02\/07\/10391708.aspx\">the cat is out of the bag<\/a>, it becomes trivial to replicate. Even if you DMCA the Wayback Machine, and me, and everyone else&#8230; you still lose.
