This was downhill, with the car in gear, but the rev counter dropped to zero and the display moaned about oil pressure. Strange, and maybe not related to:<\/p>\n<p>And then on the last day of 2024 the engine died again. Uphill this time, so no coasting.<\/p>\n<p>Chaos ensued.<\/p>\n<p>Pushed the car to the side of the road, managed to get it started. About a kilometer further, same thing. Waited a bit, it started again. By now I had a flashing glowplug light and an &#8220;Engine Workshop&#8221; message on the display.<\/p>\n<p>Managed to get home though. (It was a warm day and it quit in stop-start traffic, so maybe temperature related).<\/p>\n<p>Figured it would be a good idea to read the ECU error code. I have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diyelectronics.co.za\/store\/bluetooth\/1826-obd2-bluetooth-elm327-module.html\">ELM327<\/a> which used to work but no longer does, another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communica.co.za\/products\/cmu-obd-ii-bluetooth-car-scanner\">ELM327 from Communica<\/a> which plain sucks (only works with a specific App, for a limited time, then you need to buy the App) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.temu.com\/goods.html?_bg_fs=1&amp;goods_id=601099560659708&amp;sku_id=17592396199749\">a scanner from Temu<\/a> which never worked (not a big surprise).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5825\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/K-Line.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"619\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So I cut the plug off the Temu scanner and built a <a href=\"https:\/\/pinoutguide.com\/CarElectronics\/usb_k-line_adapter_pinout.shtml\">K-line interface<\/a>* (Golf 4 TDi, 2004 &#8212; it has CAN, but the OBD interface is still K-line). Used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ross-tech.com\/vcds-lite\/download\/\">VCDS Lite<\/a> to read the codes. Works well, faster than the bluetooth solution, recommended.<\/p>\n<p>P3105 &#8220;Valve for Intake Manifold Flap&#8221; &#8212; yea, no surprise there, I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/EGR.jpg\">removed the EGR<\/a> years ago.<\/p>\n<p>P0322 &#8220;Engine Speed Sensor (G28) &#8212; Hmmm yea that sounds feasible.<\/p>\n<p>Then I had to figure out how to remove the damn thing. Turns out you need a 9mm <strong><em>12-point<\/em><\/strong> socket, my six-pointer obviously does not cut it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5820\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/BoltHead.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"594\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bought a socket, returned the incorrect part Goldwagen had supplied me, got the correct part, fitted it and all seems well again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5821\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/036907319F.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s only done 540 000km, dunno why these sensors fail so quickly&#8230; :-)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5822\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Resistor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"364\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Figured I should maybe fix the P3105 code while I&#8217;m at it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>* R4 is not needed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So the other day, we were driving to Hout Bay in Tanya&#8217;s Golf and the engine quit.
