Ah well, pack up, go to the station, catch the first train to Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>It was running an hour late.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/250603095719-T-20250603_095719cr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"637\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s a very nice coffee-and-cake shop at the station, and it has wifi.<\/p>\n<p>Got to Budapest close to two, the train docks at the Nyugati station. I knew there was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?p=5257\">mini statue<\/a> here somewhere, but figured, let&#8217;s get the bags home first. Bought a 72-hour public transport ticket. They work. Blue to K\u00e1lvin t\u00e9r, green to II. J\u00e1nos P\u00e1l p\u00e1pa t\u00e9r, and from there we could catch the 99 bus for one stop but it&#8217;s quicker to walk.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6002\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/250603141151-T-20250603_141151cr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"717\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nice modern room on the fourth floor of a nice modern building, on the M\u00e1ty\u00e1s t\u00e9r.<\/p>\n<p>And then we were off again. We were just one stop from the Keleti station, so I took Tanya there to show her the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Car.jpg\">Trabant I saw last time<\/a> but&#8230; it was gone. Stolen, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6003\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/250603152256-W-20250603_152256r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So we got back on the Metro to Batthy\u00e1ny t\u00e9r and from there took the tram to Tanya&#8217;s favourite-in-Budapest stationery \/ craft \/ bookstore.<\/p>\n<p>And from there Szent Gell\u00e9rt is only two stops and I&#8217;d heard that there was a new mini statue so there we went.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6006\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/250603155551-W-IMG_6050cr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Found him, we did, hmmm?<\/p>\n<p>And then we found Tanya some food at an Asian place, bought wine, went home.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The next morning, I took Tanya to see some of the mini statues I&#8217;d found in her absence, last time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6008\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/250604085839-T-IMG_5807cr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"543\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ark lives close to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine on Bethlen G\u00e1bor t\u00e9r. Maybe ark-&gt;animals-&gt;veterinary medicine? I don&#8217;t know. There&#8217;s another Kolodko on the other side of the faculty but we only found that later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6009\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/250604091714-T-IMG_5815r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, this Kolodko of Hanna Szenes &#8212; a British SOE-trained Jewish Hungarian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Uu4EcADUeog\">poet<\/a>-turned-parachutess who was executed in 1944 (she was 23) for trying to helping Jews flee Nazi occupation &#8212; is on the side of Szenes Hanna park.<\/p>\n<p>And then we meandered down (well, walked to the closest tram stop and took a tram to Herzl Tivadar t\u00e9r (where there is a Kolodko of the gentleman himself, we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/?p=5257\">saw that last time<\/a>)) to Erszeb\u00e9t t\u00e9r where there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/triptobudapest.hu\">&#8220;free&#8221; walking tour<\/a> (you are expected to tip around 10 Euros per person).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6018\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retro.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/250604105906-T-20250604_105906cr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Szent Istv\u00e1n (St Stephen&#8217;s) Basilica from Szent Istv\u00e1n t\u00e9r. They have bits of dead people in there. We did not investigate.<\/p>\n<p>We saw things we had seen before and other things we had not seen. And our guide (Balazs) told us things that we had not known about the things that we had seen before.
